Shannen Ryan received her prize from Sonia O'Sullivan and Mr Noel Malone, Principal Irish athletics legend and Olympic silver medallist Sonia O'Sullivan made a guest appearance at the first annual Coláiste Chiaráin Sports Day at the University of Limerick Sports Arena recently. Sonia met and spoke with our students, presented prizes and signed autographs to a rapturous welcome from the students and staff. The day saw each class copmpeting as a team to win maximum points across a range of events ranging from the 80 metre sprint to welly throwing. The competition was fierce and was helped in no way by the glorious sunshine. The action concluded with the teachers versus the students annual grudge soccer match. Tied at 1-1after extra time, the scene was set for Mr Flannery showed that he still has his inter-county class and scored the winning goal in the penalty shoot-out. Overall, the day was a huge success and while it may be a little late for the likes of Mr Flannery and Mr Hayes to realise their Olympic dreams, who knows, we may have seen the emergence of a number of stars of the future. A special thanks must go out to the PE department and especially to Mr McCarthy who organised and coordinated the day.
