Dawid Kocik, a student from Coláiste Chiaráin, Croom has successfully competed in the semi-final of the ninth annual Poetry Aloud competition, organised by the National Library of Ireland (NLI) and Poetry Ireland.
Dawid will now proceed to the national final, which will take place in the National Library of Ireland in Dublin on 2nd December. The event will see 29 students from across the country compete in the junior, intermediate and senior categories for the Seamus Heaney Poetry Aloud Award.
Poetry Aloud is an annual poetry speaking competition for post-primary school students across the island of Ireland and was launched in 2006 as Yeats Aloud, becoming Poetry Aloud in 20017. Since then, it has grown enormously from just a few hundred entries to over 1,600 entries in 2016. The prescribed poems in this year’s competition reflect on 1916, World War 1 and also include the work of contemporary Irish poets.
The musical entertainment was provided by Colaiste Chiarain students, coordinated by Ms. Una Feehan. Well done to all award winners across the city and county and to everyone who made this such awards ceremony possible. This annual event is run by An Garda Siochana and is sponsored by Garveys Supervalue.
Eminent Psychologist Dr. Fergus Heffernan will visit our school on Thursday, December 1, 2016. Dr. Heffernan holds qualifications as a psychologist,psychotherapist and a family therapist and is well known for his inspirational talks.
Dr. Heffernan will present workshops promoting positive mental health to the student body throughout the day and will meet with college staff and parents later that evening. The theme underpinning the day is Creating Resilience Within the Entire School Community.
All parents are cordially invited to a presentation by Dr. Heffernan entitled Understanding the Emotional Well Being of Teenagers, Children and the Family. This promises to be a thought provoking session which will look at why our teenagers and children do not have appeared to have developed resilience. Light refreshments will be served. Free Raffle on the night!

Last night the parents of or America Exchange students prepared a lovely meal for all those participating in the Limerick to Limerick Exchange. Mr.Moore and Ms. Tobin were also presented with a copy of the History of the Limerick Township here in Philadelphia which will be displayed in Colaiste Chiarain, Limerick, Ireland. We would like to thank our friends at Springford for a fantastic stay, although it's not over yet! Roll on New York!!!!!!
